Can You Continue Breastfeeding if You are Pregnant? – by Jennifer Welch

on May 31, 2011

Welcome back for the second blog of our series on Lactation by our Guest Blogger, Jennifer Welch!

Are you starting to think about having another baby?  Maybe you are already pregnant and wondering if you should continue to let your little one come to the breast?

Yes!!!  You can still breastfeed when you are pregnant!

There are a few circumstances when breastfeeding is not a good idea during pregnancy.  Check below to see if any apply to you:
•    You are expecting twins or more
•    You are severely malnourished or underweight
•    For your current pregnancy, your midwife or doctor has recommended that you not have orgasm because you are at risk for pre-term labour

We hear lots of myths and old wives tales.  But it is important to know that breastfeeding during pregnancy does not cause:
•    Miscarriage or pre-term labour in an otherwise healthy pregnancy
•    Mom, nursling, or new baby to be deprived of nutrients
•    Problems for your current nursling due to exposure to pregnancy hormones
•    Your milk to “go bad”
